With automation and machines basic goods and materials can be produced locally and more efficiently. During the design phase of manufacture goods it would be sensible to consider optimization and recycling of materials. Waste management is a key factor in manufacturing goods. Landfills are continually growing. Landfills waste resources, space, money and are contributing to climate change. Every landfill on Earth is just a waste of potential. Not only are goods not recycled efficiently, goods are also unnecessarily planned for obsolescence. This derives from competition and the desire for reoccurring profit. Goods are not optimized for optimal efficiency and durability. Competition between businesses produces four basic forms of unnecessary inefficiency, which leads to waste.18
- Proprietary incompatibility of related goods components
- Wasteful multiplicity of goods by competing businesses of the same genre
- Incentivized good weakness to encourage turnover
- Inherent good weakness due to seeking cost efficiency
If our objective were to be more intelligent with material production there would exist a universal standardization of all related genre components wherever possible with an intelligent way to recycle manufacturing goods.
Nanotechnology will eventually help assist the ability to create goods from the atomic level up and disassemble goods back into atoms and molecules. Helping with the improvement of manufacturing methods such as, water purification systems, energy systems, better food production methods, nutrition and large-scale infrastructure, auto-fabrication and waste management. In addition to material production, today 3D printers have the capability of producing items on demand. 3D printing has the capability to enhance basic good production. 3D printers have the capability to print small items like clothing, shoes, utensils, artificial skin and the list continues. They also have the capability of producing large-scale items like bridges and homes without the assistance of physical human labor.19 3D printing can revolutionize manufacturing through cheap and quick production, less waste, accessibility and eco-friendly methods. With the current innovation of material production we can reduce waste, increase production and make manufacturing accessible to homes and communities.
